Radiocarbon in the oceans
We determine radiocarbon (14C) in dissolved inorganic carbon of seawater using a novel, fully automated method that allows the rapid extraction and graphitization of 14C. We are mapping contemporary 14C distributions in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. By comparison to historical 14C observations, we want to use the recent temporal changes of 14C to provide novel insights on ocean circulation and carbon cycling.
